The scientific committee

To obtain certification, Cultural routes are required to establish a scientific committee active in academic research on the route’s topic, thus giving scientific validity to its network membership and to its programme of activities.

The Scientific Committee of the Association for the Cultural Route of St Olav Ways, has the
overarching goal to promote a network of knowledge and cooperation in research and
teaching, and encourage research within relevant disciplines for the route.

The objective of the SC is further to promote knowledge about the Cultural Route of St. Olav Ways.

The members of the committee are experts in disciplines concerning the aims and objectives
of the cultural route and the association, for instance heritage, cultural tourism, theology, landscape and sustainable development. The committee will have specific focus on the St Olav Ways, the legacy of St. Olav, and other objectives relevant for the modern phenomenon
of pilgrimage in general.

The members are:

Dr. Kersti Markus, professor of art history, Tallinn university (Estonia).

Dr. Minna Opas, docent of ethnograpyhy of religion, University of Turku (Finland).

Dr. Mats Nilsson, associate professor of cultural geography, Karlstad university (Sweden).
